Witch’s log, 5th to 9th of June 2018 We left L’Aber Ilduit as planned at 10:30am and sailed along the Chanel du Four with a pleasant breeze all the way, later close hauling to Camaret-sur-Mer. Arrived at 14:42 and moored along the visitors breakwater pontoon. The village is a pleasant stop for anyone crossing and Read More
Across the Channel and Beyond
Witch’s log, star date 1st to 5th of June, 2018. We finally set off for the big adventure by leaving Plymouth on the 1st at 16:00 towards France. Matthew had arrived the night before ready to join the crew which, at this point, comprises him, David and myself. An exciting one and a half days Read More
Trial Trip to Falmouth
Before setting out into bigger adventures we thought it best to try the Witch on a little sail first. With roughly 40NM each way we set course to Falmouth on the 22nd and had an overall pleasant beat / reach all the way. Had we got up earlier and we’d have made it in daylight, Read More
Launch Day
So it finally happened, the Witch is back on the water and ready to sail. To celebrate we had some friends over for a sunny afternoon sail out of Plymouth with a special guest, their Portuguese Water Dog Elsie who seemed to love it.
Going Up the Mast

Preparing for the Big Sail
May has been a busy month for the Witch. With the big crossing in mind which will lead us to France and hopefully across Biscay in two weeks, the list of things to buy, fix, and prepare is/was nearly endless. I don’t think I can remember everything that we did anymore as it has been Read More
Safe Navigation using OceanTrack
OceanTrack is based on an old app I once wrote called SeaQuest; it has been revived, improved and just relaunched under a new name and a modern interface. Like all good things in technology it was born out of necessity rather than on a whim, and in particular, the need for the Witch to know Read More
Out of the Water Again for a bit of Maintenance
It’s that time of the year again … the Witch came out of the water today for her usual maintenance. For the second year in a row she’s back in Southdown which is a nice marina / yard in Cornwall, very close to home, full of friendly people and so much better than the overpriced QaB Read More
The Beast from the East
About time, a brand new deck plus a fluffy comfy cushioned cockpit. Not a usual sight of the Witch, in fact it’s the first time I’ve seen her covered in snow. It has been a particularly cold week in Plymouth. Who’s in for a sail tomorrow?
Flying a Spinnaker is a Child’s Game
So it *seems* flying a spinnaker isn’t that difficult, all you need is a Jacob for the helm and a Mike to know what he’s doing! It doesn’t look too complicated when you’re mostly just watching and learning, although I bet it is. At long last after 5 years, the Witch has finally flown her Read More
